Solar Charge Controllers, or Controllers, are used to control the voltage produced by solar panels to a level that will safely charge batteries and run appliances. 12v solar panels can produce anywhere between 12v and 21v and if this voltage were to be put straight into the battery it would overcharge the battery and damage it. The Controller is put in place to adjust this voltage to the correct charging voltage of the type of battery connected to it. There are two main types of solar controller available, these are PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and MPPT (Multi Power Point Tracking). What is an Inverter and what do they do?

An inverter is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a Solar energy system if you need to run 230V appliances which require AC; (Alternating Current) instead of 12V DC (Direct Current). The inverter converts DC electricity from the solar panels or from batteries, into AC electricity which is the same as is supplied by the electrical grid for most household appliances. Home appliances use 230v AC in the UK and when this is unavailable an inverter can be used to give a constant electrical current, supersizing a 12, 24 or 48V input up to 230V output. How do Solar Panels work & what are they?

Solar panels work by turning 'light' energy (not 'heat' energy) from the sun into electricity. If it is light outside, the solar panels will start generating electricity. Each solar panel is made from photovoltaic (PV) cells that are sandwiched between thin layers of silicon and metal. Each solar panel has 60 or more PV cells that are joined together. The silicon and metal layers inside the panel have different electronic properties that energise when photons from sunlight hit them - this creates an electric field with a direct current (DC).
